Riene Zend was born to Daara Zend during a posting on the planet Serroco. Her early education left her with the distinct inflection of her birthworld, and an appreciation for military thinking.

Zend was accepted to Cliffside as part of the 21 (36) incoming class. The recent destruction of the Death Star left Riene enraged at the hated Rebels, and despite being one of minority of female cadets, she eschewed excess familiarity with other members of her gender. She did not need to band together to fight an unfair system; she simply needed to fight it.

However, Zend's eagerness to bring final victory to the Empire was nearly crushed as the second Death Star was destroyed while on furlough visit before starting her final year. Rage stoked even higher, Zend approached her final examination (a live-combat mission with a platoon of Stormtroopers to capture a small Rebel space station) with zeal, leading from the front... often exceeding the guidance of her supervising sergeant major. Her unit successfully captured the station's control center, and after purging the station of most oppposition, she ordered the base scuttled. Zend would personally plant one of the charges, and was wounded by a Givin holdout. She earned a letter of commendation for her valor, as well as a wound medal for the laser bolt through her left arm.

The newly-minted second lieutenant would not fight the hated Rebellion for two years after her commissioning. Instead, with the Imperial Civil War increasing in ferocity, she found herself staring down the sights of her weapon at men and women in Imperial uniforms. When the opportunity finally came to point her E-11 at Rebel forces, she recalled her experience on the station. While other Imperial commanders remained contemptuous of the Alliance's nonhuman personnel, Zend was more wary of the wide array of abilities and talents aliens could bring to the enemy's forces.

Zend's platoon was the only unit from her battalion to survive the botched assault on Bandomeer and held out until heavy Imperial Army forces punched through the Alliance encirclement and evacuated the surviving assault forces. She was again decorated and given command of her reconstituted company. She fought several more engagements against the United Warlord Armies, earning a promotion to first lieutenant.

With the fall of the warlords after the Battle of Coruscant, Zend was briefly assigned to the Anaxes picket under the command of Fleet Admiral Daara Zend. It was the first time mother and daughter had seen each other in person since the destruction of the Second Death Star.

Six months into her assignment, the lieutenant took ill with Plyridian fever and was quarantined for four weeks and shipped planetside to recuperate. She was forced to watch from her sickbed as the Alliance fleet attacked in full force. She arranged to have her personal weapons left in her bed if the Alliance managed to land planetside and try to take control of the hospital, but it was ultimately unnecessary. With the Alliance defeat, the picket was refreshed with new forces and Zend's unit transferred. She bade her mother farewell and congratulations on her recent elevation to Grand Admiral.

For the next year, Zend elected for advanced cross-training, obtaining both Desert Operations and Wetland Operations certification. After completing her training, she was promoted to captain and assigned a billet as a company commander. She eagerly awaits the opportunity to test herself in battle against the Rebellion once more.
